YOUNGSTERS looking to take up a new hobby are being invited to join a new street hockey session.
Banbury Bulldogs Skater Hockey Club has recently launched a one-hour street hockey session at Banbury’s Spiceball Leisure Centre.

The sessions, which take place on Saturday afternoons from 1.30pm - 2.30pm, are for children aged up to 12-years-old and of all abilities.

Fiona Turner of Banbury Bulldogs Skater Hockey Club said: “As a club we are trying to promote skater hockey locally, not necessarily at club level but as a sport that both girls and boys can equally take part in and most importantly, once introduced to the game, will enjoy.

“We provide all of the equipment so parents can breathe a sigh of relief at not having to find the spare cash for sports kit – a big bonus given that we are all watching the pennies.”

The first session is free and then £3 thereafter including the relevant kit and skates.

A skater hockey club which is run entirely by volunteers has received a cash grant of £1,913 to help promote the group within the local community.

The Banbury Bulldogs Skater Hockey Club, based at Spiceball Leisure Centre in Banbury, successfully applied to the Oxfordshire Community Foundation which supports non-profit organisations across the county.

The group stated in its application that “skater hockey is a fast paced, exciting but relatively unknown minority sport” and was applying for a grant to increase publicity of the club in the area and to attract new members of all ages.

Jane Woodley, Chief Executive of the Oxfordshire Community Foundation said:
“We are delighted to support this great community group, which caters for all ages from beginners upwards. It is an excellent way for people to learn skills, encourage team spirit and to stay fit. This is all possible thanks to the commitment and dedication of the volunteers running the club.”
