and Alfie makes 23 . . .

Street hockey = beaming smiles, enormous fun, great confidence building and much, much more.

In the last few months we’ve seen our street hockey club get more and more successful with yesterdays newbie Alfie making it 23. Outstanding! That’s nearly enough players for 5 scrimmage teams I’ll have you know and boy do they like their scrimmages or what!

Hats off and huge thanks to coach Ricci (also our junior captain) for leading the sessions & to his coaching assistants Harris (junior assist) and Jack (youth captain and 2013 youth SASH team assist). Because of their coaching skills and enthusiasm 5 of our street players have already joined the club most also signing up to play league with another 3 or 4 players nagging their parents to do the same, brilliant!
Well done guys. keep up the good work!

Now if I was to pick a ‘street player of the week’ then this weeks imaginary award would go to Dylan, I’ll swear he’d velcro’d the ball to his stick and was just awesome to watch, can’t wait for head coach Tony to see him in action, yes well done Dylan!

My rounds of imaginary applause would be for Becca, our youth team goalie, who through illness has been absent from training for an absolute age, lovely to see you again Becca, glad you’re feeling better and thank you for helping our new pee wee goalie Emily train, much appreciated ;)
For Emily for taking such a huge step (girl power!), for Alfie for giving it his all and for Carolyn (club secretary & pee wee manager) for making such fabulous gooseberry muffins nom nom nom . . . . and then some.

In the pipeline . . . .
Riccis street player of the month awards
Organising friendly matches against other street hockey clubs, please let us know if your child would be interested in this.

Yesterday was great.

Well done Emily, that's one heck of an achievement young lady. Ricci, (our street hockey lead coach) Harris and Jack are so pleased with all the effort you've put in and massively proud of you as indeed we all are.

Last Junior / Senior training before the summer break

Well done Jack!

Announcement made by S.A.S.H Youth team selection 10th July 2013:
As you know we are current champions as last years squad won. Last year our Captain was Jai Robinson (Banbury Bulldogs) and Assistant Dylan Bonner, I would not have any reason this year to change that, but Jai has now moved up to Juniors (what an amazing compliment!). This year Dylan will be Captain and we have chosen JACK ABBOTT as 'A' Captain.

Congratulations Jack, well deserved.

The last word(s)

I thought it might be interesting to hear what Tony (Head Coach) and Carolyn (Pee Wee Manager) had to say after yesterdays exciting pee wee match . . . .
Carolyn couldn't have looked any happier after her 'angels & devils' gave an outstanding performance in their match against Oxford held at Farnborough Leisure Centre.
"Fantastic as always and I'm really pleased with the effort they all put in, I'm very proud of them".

Not surprisingly grinning like the Cheshire Cat after his daughter, Victoria Wakelin, scored her very first match goal (ever) Tony couldn't praise the team enough,
"they played really well, obviously we need to work on some things at training and we will but today they showed a lot of character, even though Oxford were winning they all kept their heads up and didn't give up, tremendous spirit and they should be proud of themselves, and of course we had 2 good goals from Tom and Victoria . . . ."

We couldn't agree more!
Well done pee wees!
Nice one coach!
Is thinking even the devils might become 'angels' after today Carolyn!
And thank you to the parents for their amazing support, the club salutes you!

FINAL RESULT:
OXFORD STORM 12 - 2 BANBURY BULLDOGS

Goal scorers:
TOM ALLEN & VICTORIA WAKELIN

GO BULLDOGS!

Banbury & district show

Help raise the profile of the club at tomorrow's Banbury Show by lending a hand on the Bulldogs stall. If anyone can even help out for even an hour it would be appreciated as Carolyn and Fiona will need a break if only to queue for the loo at some point between 10 and 4pm!
Plus it will be lovely to see you!
Good luck to the Seniors playing the Reapers tomorrow (yes you're excused but only till 2) and good luck to the youth players taking part in tomorrow's regional trials!

When is 42 more than a number? When you're a Wakelin that's when!

Aimee (pictured above probably about to score), the latest Wakelin to sport the number 42 shirt in all things inline, our Pee Wee Captain for 2 years running, selected for the Regional Team in 2011 and 2012, member of our Youth Team at last years Nationals . . . .an already impressive list of achievements we think, however, the expectations that come with being 42 or a 4 to the others 2, are pretty massive.
First there was Chris Wakelin (42) an exceptional player, then just behind came Magic Wakelin (42), he who was Team GB's Junior Captain at last years Europeans and who has won more trophies than i personally have ever seen in my life, when they played in the same team Chris was (4) and Magic (2), we have it on good authority that this was Chris's proudest hockey moment, him as (4), Magic as (2) which really is just too ahhhhh for words.
So you see following in the skate steps of so many (42) achievements the pressure must be massive.
At tomorrow's regional trials our Pee Wee Captain is going to do her damnedest to be selected for a 3rd year. Of course we all wish her good luck but quite honestly luck doesn't come into it (I think it might be banned for all 42's) , nope luck doesn't come into it if you're number 42, every achievement comes from hard graft, sweat and passion, that's how it works for the '42s'.
Even so Good Luck tomorrow Aimee, you deserve to get selected, you've earned it.
GO PEE WEE CAPTAIN!

Good Luck Ellen!

Tomorrow see's our amazing Pee Wee goalie, Ellen Ryder, trying out for the Regional Team.
Obviously we all wish her the very best of luck not that Ellen should need it given she's the best Pee Wee goalie in the land!
GOOD LUCK ELLEN!

Fitness Benefits of Inline Skating Are Huge!

Find more 'knowledge' @ www.wilsa.org

A lot of people take up inline skating because they see others doing it and think that it looks like fun. Well, double bonus; it is a lot of fun and it also has huge fitness benefits!

Inline skating transcends many age groups, from young kids to older adults. It can be done outdoors during nice weather, or indoors during more inclement weather at many local skating rinks or even at some community centres.

In general, when you add at least 20 minutes of cardiovascular exercise to your lifestyle 3-5 times a week, you have health and fitness benefits. These general benefits include: reduced coronary risk, weight loss, stress release, improved body composition (decreased fat tissue), increased bone strength (if the exercise is weight-bearing) social contacts, a feeling of vigour  improved sleep, and a feeling of empowerment by feeling in control of your body. Fortunately, skating is so much fun that a workout rarely lasts just 20 minutes!

You are probably wondering what are the fitness benefits specific to inline skating? Inline skating benefits include: cardiovascular, strengthening, muscle toning, calorie burning, developing better balance, coordination, and agility, and finally, it is low impact on the joints! Now wait a minute, how can one sport do so much and still be both affordable and fun! The answer is simple, just try it!

Cardiovascular benefits to inline skating are roughly equivalent to those derived from cycling and running, especially once you are skating at approximately 10-12 miles per hour. Suffice it to say that studies have shown that inline skating burns lots of calories. As an aside, last week I saw on TV a couple getting married on skates. It was the most fun wedding I ever saw. I can only imagine what the wedding invitations looked like. Kudos to the fun couple.

Muscle strengthening and toning are obvious when you look at anyone who has been skating for a while. Skating develops the muscles in the lower body, particularly the quadriceps (front of thighs), glutes (rear end) abductors and abductors of thigh (inner and outer thigh/hip), and also the lower leg muscles (calves and shins). Postural muscles (abs and back extensors) get a workout too, by stabilizing the body during skating. Beginners should maintain fairly upright posture, while speed skaters lean forward to decrease air resistance.

Another fitness benefit is the fact that inline skating is “low impact”, at least if you don’t fall! It is much easier on your joints (especially knees) than running and as I mentioned previously, can actually help stabilize certain joints such as knees by strengthening the muscles that support it. A lot of people take to skating because they can’t run any more, but want to still get good exercise.

When you skate, you spend a lot of time on one foot. Skating is about dynamic balance, or balance in motion. Skating requires a lot of coordination. By learning to do more advanced moves on your skates, such as skating backwards, crossover turns, inline hockey, aggressive skating, and even hip hop dancing, you can challenge both your coordination and agility while you are learning and having fun.

Finally, probably the greatest fitness benefit of all is that inline skating is fun and gives you a sense of accomplishment and mental well-being! If it is fun, than you will stick with it and if you stick with it, then you will derive these benefits from it! Remember to wear the safety gear, because there are no benefits to getting hurt because you didn’t wear the gear!

And what do points mean Pee Wees?

Ah yes prizes that's what!

Yesterday saw Head Coach Tony Wakelin dangle a carrot in front of the Pee Wees in the shape of, work hard in training, pay attention to the coaching staff and your team mates, try your best, have fun and whoever has the most points at the end of the season wins an amazing carrot . . . um prize rather, and an amazing one!
It was noted how much harder the Pee Wees trained last night . . . a coincidence mebe? Nope, Carolyn's Angels & Devils have their sights set well and truly on winning the finest hockey stick a Pee Wee could wish for . . . .

Brilliant idea Coach, which it would be because we have a brilliant Coach!

GO PEE WEES!

Bulldogs very own Captain Jack . . .

Not a pirate (obviously), this season's Youth Captain, Jack Abbott (make a note of the name because he'll go far) speaks really highly of his team mates, he also speaks very highly of the club and come to think of it he even speaks very highly of the Youth Team Manager . . . and that's his Dad!
In a nut-shell Jack Abbott is an incredibly well-mannered, genuine young man who deserves all the respect he receives. Yeah, he'll be a pretty good Captain we think.

Tomorrows matches are against Ash and Oxford, how do you think the team will perform?
"I know the team will give at least 110%, they did in our opening 2 matches, the final results of both matches no way mirrored how well we played that weekend, we were pretty proud of ourselves, tomorrows matches will have the same committment from everyone in the team so we'll see"

Which team in the league do you want to beat the most?
"Swindon"

Before matches when you all go for a warm-up run, is it true that your Manager (Martin, his Dad lol) runs with you?
"Yep, he came 3rd last time! Alex and I just beat him"

Best hockey moment?
"At last years Youth Nationals, I think we were playing Eastbourne, apart from Becca (goalie) there was only me and Jai on the rink, Jai still scored, it was brilliant"

You're one of our up-and-coming coaching stars, following in the footsteps of Zach, Magic and Ricci, do you plan on training to be a coach or official in the future?
"If I can then yes, definately, I really enjoy it. Coaching our new 'Street Hockey' sessions with Ricci is great fun and I'm learning alot"

Favourite colour?
"White"

Best X-Box game?
"GTA5"

When you get your pilots license can I have a free flight to New York or somewhere?
"No"

So, Heyford may have kick started Jacks love of all things inline but we Bulldogs have made him one of our own.
Good luck and kick much a$$ tomorrow!

GO BULLDOGS

No amount of Easter eggs will make this better

Due to the inconvenience of Easter there isn't any training or street hockey today at Spiceball. This makes us quite sad . . .
Anyhoo, Happy Easter . .

Saturday, 9 March 2013

Ricci Capel talks hockey

First matches last weekend as Junior Captain Ricci, how was it?
"Pretty good, I enjoyed it"
Even though we didn't win that weekend, how do you think the team did, were you happy with everyone's performance?
"Yes, everyone in the team gave 110%, I couldn't ask for much more than that to be honest, I knew they would put that amount of effort in that's why I have a lot of respect for them, first weekend of the season, we were just finding our feet, we're still going to qualify for the Nationals"
Is that this seasons goal then, to qualify for the Nationals?
"Yeah, that's one of my goals"
Ok, so which team in the league would you most like to beat?
"Definitely Ash, and we will"
You've played at every level, minnow, pee wee, youth etc, for any pee wee reading this what's the difference when you play matches as a junior compared to matches you played as a pee wee?
"It's a lot faster, harder, so much more physical at junior level, by the time you get to play as a junior it's not too much of a shock to the system if you've been training hard and listening to what Tony (Coach) tells you to do . . . it's just very physical and fast at junior level"
You've been selected to try out for Team GB this year . . how did that make you feel?
"I was really glad to be nominated, very proud and of course Jai and Alex R. were invited to try out as well, if all 3 of get picked it'll be brilliant"
You do quite a bit of coaching these days, the Street Hockey Sessions for a start, is coaching something you enjoy? Is it something you're going to keep doing or do you fancy moving into the world of officials, being a ref and stuff?
"No way do I want to be a ref, I enjoy coaching, Jack and I coach the Street Hockey players, it's good fun"
Yes the younger players have a huge amount of respect for you, it's nice to see
So, your bestest ever hockey moment was . . . ?
"Scoring my first goal as a pee wee in 2005"
Your Mum's just told me that you scored the winning goal at the pee wee Nationals in 2005 against Swindon . . . remember that?
"oh yes . . . lol"
Finally, were you really called Pocket Rocket as a Pee Wee?
"No, my Mum made that up"
Oh? Lol, uhuh, cheers Ricci ;-)

Now we can celebrate . . .

Hallelujah!
SASH have finally, and at long last, booked Spiceball Leisure Centre  . . . So;

Match reports 03/03/2013 . . .

Sunday was the start of this year’s UK Skater Hockey Season with Junior and Pee Wee teams from Banbury Bulldogs Skater Hockey Club playing in the opening weekend’s fixtures.

Junior League
Swindon Flames 10 - Bulldogs 1
Oxford 9 - Bulldogs 0

Bulldog’s Junior squad were left to count the cost (and goal tally) of some impressive passing from Swindon. The teams looked pretty equal in the match’s opening exchanges but with Banbury squandering some of their early possession due to some below par passing, Swindon took the opportunity to press forward, and after being kept at bay for a while by Banbury’s defence and some top drawer saves from their keeper Dave Ballaam, Swindon’s persistence paid off breaking the deadlock then taking the advantage by swiftly extending their lead. Banbury dug deep but as the game progressed Swindon steadily extended their lead, the only consolation for Banbury being a goal from their captain, Ricci Capel.
The Junior’s second match was a much more evenly contested match, with both teams having shots on goal and fiercely challenging the other for possession. In the end, the deciding factor was a match winning performance by two Oxford players.

Pee Wee League
Oxford Storm 1 - Bulldogs 0
Ash Avalanche Freeze 1 - Bulldogs 2

The two opening matches for Banbury’s Pee Wee team were both thrillers. Banbury’s team which included some new recruits playing in a competitive match for the first time, gave it their all and they should be proud of the effort they put in and how they rose to the occasion.Their first game against Oxford was balanced on a knife edge for minute after minute with both teams coming close to scoring. When eventually the deadlock was broken, Banbury kept attacking and were unlucky not to have scored.
Banbury’s will to win was rewarded in their second match - coming from a goal down to beat Ash thanks to a great team performance, goals from Tom and Ted Allen and an impressive leading display from captain Aimee Wakelin who lead her team to victory.

Angels & Devils . . .

A sneak preview and a 'hot off the press' scoop maybe of the Pee Wee Managers exciting new team logo . . . Carolyn is officially 're-branding' the Pee Wee team as 'Carolyns Angels & Devils' . . . Yes, we like!
Question . . . ? What if you've got angels that are, in reality, more akin to devils . . . ?
I for one, needn't look too far away to see a prize example of this in action. LOL.

Saturday, 16 February 2013

We're not boasting . . . oh yes we are!

Ricci Capel, Jai Robinson and Alex Ryder have been asked to join the GB Junior Team today for trials.
Outstanding!
Having already done the Club proud, we hope today they make themselves proud . . .  mind you, as all three of them are amazing players and all-round very nice chaps of course they will, it goes without saying!

Robbed of 3rd by a sloe blue elephant . .

In true Bulldog spirit the 'Banbury Bulldogs Quiz Team' (yes we do have one . . . of sorts), Wilf, Darren, Carolyn, Martin and Fiona took on other intelligent teams, 'Quizzy Rascal', 'Horse Burgers' 'Norfolk and Hope' to name but a few, at tonight's 'Curry and Quiz Night' held at Chenderit School, organised brilliantly by the fabulous School Association bods . . .

Anyhoo, if it hadn't of been for a 'sloe blue elephant' we'd have come 3rd, as it was we came a more than respectable, joint 4th.
Uhuh, the rest of the team were very clever!

But oh, don't some people go on . . . . and on . . .
Typical of Darren, if he mentioned the sloe blue arrrrggghhh elephant once, he mentioned it a million times, on a loop akin to a broken record . . .  he's never ever going to let it drop that if it hadn't been for the 'sloe blue chuffing elephant' that ultimately cost us 3 stupid chuffing points, yeah yeah blah blah blah joint 4th, yawn, whatever . .
And before anyone else starts, NO 3rd place wouldn't of won us a prize . . . or have got us a certificate so hello? Does it chuffing matter . . . ?!!!

Stupid sloe blue sodding elephants to one side, it was a really good evening, everyone enjoyed themselves even though the hateful sloe chuffing blue dumb elephant cost someone not too far away a round of drinks as penance . . .  Shamim got us a point (yay) and he wasn't even there, the bar almost ran dry and the food was lovely.
Fantastic!

P.S If I hear one mention of the sloe blue elephant tomorrow Darren, so help me I won't be responsible for my actions . . .

And don't do it again!

So, our coach isn't the only one to dish out push-ups as a form of 'punishment' . . .
I do believe yesterdays 'hit the floor and give me 10' was metered out for not responding to an instruction quickly enough (you sloth's!).
Anyhoo, Rhode Island Police dish out the same to naughty teenagers . . . as 'did' a boss in Milan to his staff if they made a mistake, I say 'did' because I think he's now languishing in prison, no doubt doing lots of push-ups, for being a bit OTT where his staff were concerned . . .

Any other business . . .

Just in case anyone was wondering what happens at our committee meetings . . . . I can report that lots of clever things are discussed and lots of coffee downloaded . . . to start with anyhoo.

I'm not one to gossip but, from what I gathered Darrens got cones (painful), Carole will only do a semi naked photo shoot when the weather warms up, the treasurers report would look better without the yellow background and I don't know the first thing about Mr Poly..

As I said lots of clever things were discussed . . .

Only joshing guys! lmao.

Get your skates on!

Absolutely delighted are we by the turn out for Saturdays 'Street Hockey' session, it was great to see so many new faces, even better was seeing so many kids getting into it and really enjoying themselves . . . job done!
I did have a chuckle at the '3 amigos' who came to just watch (uhuh) but after 5 minutes were getting kitted up desperate to have a go, just brilliant!
For those who don't yet know Banbury Bulldogs Skater Hockey Club have recently started a one hour 'street hockey' session at Spiceball Leisure Centre on Saturday afternoons 1:30 - 2:30. The age group for this is up to 12 years, no experience is necessary AND we provide all the kit, including skates, that the kiddys need . . . because we're nice like that lol, ahem . . .
Anyhoo skating on, the first session is free then it's £3.00 per session thereafter. A veritable bargain.
As a club we are trying to promote skater hockey locally, not necessarily at club level but as a sport that both girls and boys can equally take part in and most importantly, once introduced to the game, will enjoy!
Also as we provide all the equipment, parents can breathe a sigh of relief at not having to find the spare cash for sports kit, a big bonus we think given we're all watching the pennies.
See you at the next session!
Go Bulldogs!

And on the 7th day, Carol baked some cakes and all was good!

#NEWSFLASH#

Tomorrow's cakes, baked as always by the lovely Carol Wakelin (Mum to number 42 x 3), are . . . . wait for it . . . .

BLUEBERRY MUFFINS!!!

Roll on tomorrows training is all I can say and I for one will be taking a foody container along to transport the 4 I'm bringing home in. Diets are for wimps!

Now as Carol doesn't blow her own trumpet, bugle or recorder I shall do it for her.
Last year Carols cakes (and the teas and coffees etc) added over £300 to club funds which is amazing! She buys all the ingredients, gives up her time (like she isn't busy enough eh?) just so's the rest of us get to stuff our faces with the most delicious of cakes.
Thank you Carol, the Bulldog salutes you!

P.S Put me down for an extra 3 to eat at training!
